Way back before Steeltown Chowdown one of the first unique Hamilton food thing I ever fell in love with was the Big Rudi. A schnitzel with cheese and bacon, the fixin’s and ideally Russian dressing but sometimes a different orange coloured salad dressing to add some tang. Today, they still don’t let me down with that fresh onion bun and fast fresh service. @denningersfoods is a rare example of a place where I have gone for one thing, got another and not been let down. There’s so many great options here and most lunches cost less than $10. Do you remember that original location on Upper James at Mohawk? I love the new store but man do I miss those rounded, wooden spindle chairs with a spicy burger just before a baseball game with my dad. Go make some memories! -Todd

This is one of those hidden gems that is off the radar for donuts in the city, but is so good that I kind of want to keep it to myself…In the vein of @beechwooddoughnuts, Planted is a vegan restaurant serving not only entrees but a wide range of doughnuts and desserts. Normally a “healthier” description of a dessert would turn me right off, but let me tell you these doughnuts were off the charts. Crispy without being greasy, with excellent density and taste and huge variety to choose from every day. Definitely my style of doughnut and I would easily put it amongst the best in the area (more to come on that this weekend). The friendly service and free parking were also a nice touch. Well now that I’ve shared the secret, get down there and try for yourself! Just make sure you leave some for me. -Mush

There’s certain places you can name in the city when running into a fellow Hamiltonian where you quickly learn they’re of the ilk that makes up Steeltown. One of those places is Mike’s Subs. With various locations around the city, they’ve been encompassing the hard working Hamiltonian’s lifestyle for decades. For me, a great sub features lots of protein, a fresh bun and quick friendly service. It’s an overall satisfaction package and we’re lucky to have so many places in town doing it right. Shout out to Mike’s Subs along with all our other hoagie hounds in town such as @speedysubshamilton, @mega_subs, @buddyssubsandgrill, Andy’s 2-4-1 and Duarte’s. That’s just to name a few of my favourites and say thanks for keeping me filled up on a budget and never giving me a reason to lean on Mr. Sub or Subway as an alternative. -Todd
